Overview
Activated carbon purifies water for soft drinks and bottled water, and removes unwanted color, taste, and contaminants from juices, wine, beer, and spirits. Breweries and bottlers also use it to purify carbon dioxide so that no off-flavors reach the drink.
How it works
- Process water or liquid product flows through carbon, or carbon is dosed and filtered out.
- Unwanted color, taste, and trace contaminants are adsorbed.
- For CO₂, the recovered gas passes through carbon beds before it is used for carbonation.
Why coconut shell
Microporous carbon removes the small molecules behind many off-flavors and odors.
This page describes activated carbon in general. Suitability for a specific use depends on the activated carbon grade and the system it is used in.
