Energy storage

Storing electrical energy on a vast carbon surface.

Mining, oil and gas, and energy

Overview

Supercapacitors store energy as electric charge on the surface of highly porous carbon electrodes. They charge and discharge very quickly, supporting uses such as regenerative braking and grid stabilization. Plant-based carbons are also being developed as anode materials for batteries.

How it works

  1. High-purity activated carbon is made into electrode sheets.
  2. Electrodes are assembled with an electrolyte and separator.
  3. Ions gather on the carbon surface as the device charges.
  4. Energy is released rapidly when needed.

Why coconut shell

Coconut shell is a well-established starting material for supercapacitor-grade carbons because of its purity and pore structure.

This page describes activated carbon in general. Suitability for a specific use depends on the activated carbon grade and the system it is used in.
