Overview
Biogas from landfills and anaerobic digesters can generate power or be upgraded to renewable natural gas, but it carries contaminants. Hydrogen sulfide is corrosive and toxic, and siloxanes turn into abrasive silica deposits inside engines and turbines. Activated carbon removes both.
How it works
- Raw biogas is cooled and moisture is removed.
- It passes through carbon vessels, often two in series.
- Hydrogen sulfide, siloxanes, and VOCs are captured.
- Clean gas goes to engines, turbines, or upgrading equipment.
Why coconut shell
High micropore volume suits the siloxanes and VOCs found in biogas.
This page describes activated carbon in general. Suitability for a specific use depends on the activated carbon grade and the system it is used in.
