Metallurgy

A carbon source and reducing agent in metal production.

Direct uses of coconut-shell charcoal

Overview

In metallurgy, carbon removes oxygen from metal ores and raises the carbon content of steel. Low-ash, low-sulfur charcoal is used as a reducing agent in silicon metal and ferroalloy production and as a carbon raiser in foundries.

How it works

  1. Charcoal is sized for the furnace or ladle.
  2. It is charged with the ore or molten metal.
  3. Carbon reacts with oxygen in the ore, or dissolves into the metal.

Why coconut shell

Low ash and impurities help keep the finished metal clean and consistent.

This page describes coconut-shell charcoal uses in general. Suitability depends on the charcoal grade and each buyer's requirements.
